The Students’ RFU (SRFU) are delighted to confirm the appointment of Melissa Wright as our volunteer lead for equality, diversity and inclusion.
Mel, a civil servant and former news and sports journalist, has been involved with rugby for more than fifteen years, formerly as a player and now as a referee. She is also a committed driver for change for equality, diversity and inclusion within the game.
Mel brings to the SRFU a background of strategy development, stakeholder engagement and media and communications insight, and will lead the organisation in the ongoing development and delivery of our EDI priorities. Initial projects will include the roll-out of the new SRFU EDI toolkit, developed in partnership with Sports Structures and the RFU, and increasing the voice of students from underrepresented groups.
Mel commented “I was delighted to see this role advertised because it brings together two of the areas I’m most passionate about - diversity, inclusion and equality of opportunity on the one hand and the sport of rugby union on the other. I believe we are at a crucial moment in rugby’s future where EDI needs to be made a central priority in order for it to remain a strong and much loved community sport.”
This appointment is part of an ongoing period of governance transformation for the Students’ RFU, and complements the recent changes made to board diversity, student engagement and player pathway.
