Darren Fearn to step down as England Students Men’s Head Coach

After an incredible six seasons as part of the England Students Men’s coaching team, Head Coach Darren Fearn has announced his plans to step down.

As a former England Students player himself, Darren has been involved in the programme since 2018, joining as assistant head coach before becoming head coach in 2019. He led five international matches, navigating 2 seasons out due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with the support of fantastic assistant coaches and team management.

Darren holds the winning trophy alongside his assistant coaches and team managers after England Students were victorious with a 25-21 win over France Universities in May 2023 at the Stade André Beaudry, Terrasson-Lavilledieu.

Notably, in 2019, his first as head coach, he led the boys to a historic victory against the French for the first time in 10 years at Chester. With France taking the win at home shortly after.

This year saw the England Students side put up a fierce performance after a period of dominance, with France narrowly winning at Coventry RFC’s Butts Park Arena, 43-48.

His incredible dedication and stewardship of the team has seen players progress into Championship Rugby and higher.

Phil de Glanville said: “Darren has been an inspirational head coach for the England students, understanding that bringing a diverse range of university playing styles together to perform for England in a short space of time needs clarity both on and off the pitch. He has always made sure players enjoy the experience, whatever the result (although winning helps!) His infectious enthusiasm and high-quality coaching have been first-class, both directly and through his assistant coaching team. Thank you for a superb contribution, Darren.”

In addition to his role as Director of Rugby at Newcastle University, Darren was appointed the new Forwards Coach at Doncaster Knights earlier this year for the 2024/25 season.

Recruitment for the next SRFU Honorary Head Coach will be announced shortly.

Thank you, Daz, from everyone at the SRFU!
