The Students’ Rugby Football Union (SRFU) is pleased to announce that Martin Webdale has been appointed as the new Head Coach of the England Students Programme. Webdale takes over from Darren Fearn, who stepped down from the position in November after an incredible six seasons as part of the England Students Men’s coaching team.
Webdale is currently the head coach of Loughborough University RFC men’s side, having started the role on a full-time basis ahead of the 2023-24 season.

Under his tenure, he has guided his Loughborough side to two BUCS Super Rugby finals at the Stone X and won the championship title in April 2024.
As well as the BUCS sides at Loughborough, Webdale is also in charge of the National 2 squad, and prior to joining the set-up at Loughborough, Webdale coached at Hull RUFC in National 2 North.
On the appointment, Webdale said: “It is a huge honour to take on the role of Head Coach of the England Students Men’s team.
“It is the pinnacle of the student game in England, and I can’t wait to take on the French in France in May.
“Darren Fearn and his group of coaches have done a fantastic job with the programme in recent years, and I look forward to carrying on the good work.”
This year, the England Students side will be returning to the scene of their historic win in 2023 as they take on France Universities in what promises to be another classic clash of the University version of ‘Le Crunch’ at the Stade Beaudry Stadium in Terrasson-Lavilledieu on 24 May 2025.
SRFU chair Mark Hyndman commented: “We are delighted about Martin's appointment following a competitive process.
“He brings a wealth of experience and credibility to the programme following his success at Loughborough since his appointment, taking them to back-to-back BUCS Super Rugby Championship finals.
“I’m excited that we can continue to grow as a programme with him at the helm.”
Last year it was another nail-biter fixture between the two sides at Butts Park Arena, which saw France claim a 42-48 victory for the first time in three years, and this year, Webdale will be looking to steer his England side to another historic victory.
A reminder that player nominations for the 2025 England Student programme are now open and close at 5pm on Friday 14 February 2025.
